heatsink without a fan....
Hello all,
I have GX1 Optiplex PII 266 mhz PC. My fan near the CPU doesn't work but it has a heatsink on it. I have run out of warranty for this PC. Machine works fine, but the question I have is - is it appropriate to use it without the fan properly working as it has already have a heatsink on it. Hope the heatsink supports the machine without FAN. Anyone who know more about it let me know. Should I purchase a new CPU cooling fan.
Thank you,
jwark

Theoritically, it can run without the fan and will shut itself down if it gets too hot. This, however, will put a lot of strain on your processor and shorten the life of it. I would definitely replace the fan as it is a cheap part and easy to install.
